Ozempic® (semaglutide) is the original once-weekly GLP-1 injection, FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes — improving blood sugar and protecting the heart and kidneys. Prescribed online by licensed physicians and shipped to your door.
Once-weekly injectable · FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes
Ozempic® is a once-weekly semaglutide injection from Novo Nordisk, FDA-approved to improve blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — it mimics a natural gut hormone that prompts insulin release when blood sugar is high, slows digestion, and reduces appetite.
Beyond blood sugar, Ozempic® is also approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and to protect kidney function in those with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. It contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy® and Rybelsus®, though each brand has its own approved uses and doses.
Ozempic® mimics GLP-1, a hormone your gut releases after eating. That single signal does several things at once to help manage type 2 diabetes.
It prompts the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar is high and dials back glucagon — tighter control with lower risk of lows.
By slowing how quickly the stomach empties, it blunts the blood-sugar spikes that follow meals and helps you feel full longer.
Like other GLP-1s, it acts on hunger signals, which is why many people eat less while taking it.
In adults with type 2 diabetes, Ozempic® is also approved to lower the risk of major cardiovascular events and to slow kidney decline.
Every Ozempic® indication is tied to type 2 diabetes in adults. Here's exactly what the FDA label covers.
Type 2 diabetes · since 2017
As an add-on to diet and exercise, to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
T2D + heart disease · since 2020
To reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events — cardiovascular death, heart attack, or stroke — in adults with type 2 diabetes and established heart disease.
T2D + kidney disease · since 2025
To reduce the risk of sustained kidney-function decline, end-stage kidney disease, and cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
Ozempic® is not FDA-approved for weight loss — that's its sibling Wegovy® (the same medicine, semaglutide, at a higher dose). Tell us your goals and our physicians will recommend the right, appropriate option for you.
Ozempic® starts low and increases over time so your body can adjust and side effects stay manageable. It's a once-weekly injection at every step.
The 0.25 mg starting dose helps your body adjust and isn't a maintenance dose. Your physician steps you up about every 4 weeks based on your blood-sugar goals and how you tolerate the medication — many people stay at 0.5 mg or 1 mg. Always follow your prescriber's instructions.
Ozempic® was studied in the SUSTAIN program in adults with type 2 diabetes. These are the headline, approved outcomes — individual results vary.
In clinical trials, Ozempic® lowered A1C (a measure of long-term blood sugar) by up to about 1.8% at the higher dose, helping many adults with type 2 diabetes reach their blood-sugar targets alongside diet and exercise.
Beyond blood sugar, Ozempic® is FDA-approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with T2D and heart disease, and to slow kidney-function decline in adults with T2D and chronic kidney disease.
* Based on the SUSTAIN clinical program in adults with type 2 diabetes. Ozempic® is not FDA-approved for weight loss. Individual results vary based on dose, adherence, and health history.

Medication works best as part of a routine. These habits support steady blood sugar, ease side effects, and build lasting health.
Consistent, balanced meals support smoother blood-sugar control and make GI side effects easier to manage.
Regular movement improves insulin sensitivity and complements the medication's blood-sugar benefits.
Plenty of water and fiber-rich foods help manage common digestive side effects like constipation.
Pick a consistent weekly injection day so the medication stays at steady levels and you don't miss doses.
Monitoring blood sugar (and weight, if relevant) helps you and your provider fine-tune your plan.
Ongoing check-ins keep you on track and make managing a chronic condition feel less isolating.
Most side effects are gastrointestinal and typically mild, most common at the start or after a dose increase, and improve as your body adjusts.
Most common at the start or after dose increases. Usually mild and eases within a few weeks. Smaller meals help.
Changes in digestion are common. Staying hydrated and keeping up fiber intake helps manage symptoms.
Bloating, fullness, or mild abdominal pain — especially after eating. Typically resolves as your body adjusts.
A common GLP-1 effect. Make sure you're still meeting your nutritional needs.
Low blood sugar risk rises if combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. Your physician may adjust those doses.
Mild redness or swelling at the site. Rotating injection sites helps. Resolves quickly in most cases.
Report severe upper-abdominal pain, fever, or jaundice promptly, as gallbladder problems can occur.
Very rare but serious. Stop the medication and contact your physician immediately if you have severe, persistent abdominal pain.

Clear answers to the most common questions about Ozempic®, semaglutide, and our telemedicine program.
No. Ozempic® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes (and to reduce heart and kidney risk in people with T2D). Many people lose weight on it, but that use is off-label. The FDA-approved weight-loss form of semaglutide is Wegovy®.
Both contain semaglutide. Ozempic® is approved for type 2 diabetes at doses up to 2 mg. Wegovy® is approved specifically for weight management and uses a higher 2.4 mg dose. Your physician will determine which is appropriate.
Ozempic® is semaglutide (a GLP-1). Mounjaro® is tirzepatide, which targets two hormone receptors (GLP-1 and GIP). Both are approved for type 2 diabetes; neither is FDA-approved for weight loss (Wegovy® and Zepbound® are, respectively).
It's often covered when prescribed for type 2 diabetes, and our coordinators will work with your plan and any savings programs. Coverage for off-label use is less likely; cash-pay options are available.
Many people see blood-sugar improvements within the first several weeks, with fuller effects as the dose is titrated up over a couple of months. Your physician will track your A1C and adjust accordingly.
Store new pens in the refrigerator. Once a pen is in use, it can be kept at room temperature or refrigerated for a limited time per the label. Never freeze it.
If you remember within 5 days, take it as soon as you can. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and resume your regular weekly schedule. Don't take two doses close together.
Evaluations are conducted via secure video or an asynchronous questionnaire, depending on your state and preference. All visits are HIPAA-compliant and conducted by licensed physicians.
